Environmental Stewardship Fact Sheet
In 2010, Kaiser Permanente’s sustainability and environmental stewardship strategies achieved the following:
- Savings from purchasing safer products and services: $26 million
- Value of medical products we purchased for which suppliers were required to provide environmental data on sustainability: $791 million
- Megawatts of solar power we began installing at our California hospitals: 15
- Building energy needs that will be provided from renewable sources by 2020: 25 percent
- Amount of all hospital food purchases derived from sustainable food sources: 15 percent
- Amount of food served that was grown or produced locally (within 200 miles): More than 100 tons
- Reduction in amount of total volume of waste diverted from landfills due to recycling, reuse, and composting: 31 percent
- Amount of waste avoided by safely extending usefulness of single-use medical devices: 328,000 pounds, avoiding more than $8 million in costs.
- Proportion of laptops, desktops, and monitors that met high standards of energy efficiency and chemical safety: 85 percent
