Working on a Clinic for the Uninsured

Monday, May 18, 2009
By Shawn C. Pascale, Business Line Manager PVS-Bellflower

Today started off in high spirits. Everyone was up and ready to do some good. Today we worked at the First Grace United Methodist Church, in Mid City. This church has literally opened its doors to any type of community support group that has the same common goal. Helping the community. There is already a volunteer organization there that helps care for special needs children. We were scheduled to work on an area of the church that was to be converted to a medical clinic. Its purpose is to provide medical care for local residents that are currently employed, but cannot afford health insurance.

There is already a volunteer organization there that helps care for special needs children. We were scheduled to work on an area of the church that was to be converted to a medical clinic. Its purpose is to provide medical care for local residents that are currently employed, but cannot afford health insurance.

There were several tasks that had been scheduled for the team to accomplish over the next two days:

  1. Assemble and raise a trash chute, to allow demo'd materials to be discarded from the second floor to a trash dumpster.
  2. Demo, remove, and clean three rooms to make them one large process room
  3. Patch and paint three rooms and the hallway.

After the teams were split up, there was no stopping us.

The chute team made short work of the task. We had to use a little muscle, a little know how, and have a little faith that it was gonna work. Mission accomplished!!!!! By the time we walked up to join the rest of the team, the painting team was almost done, and the demo team had nothing left to demo. We quickly made use of the chute and cleared out the room.

After lunch, we got back to work. I wrangled up a small team to take some reusable lumber back to the Hands On tool shed. We couldn't have been gone for more than 45 minutes, and would you believe it, by the time we got back to the project site every task had been completed!!!!!

I caught up with the Hands On Project Managers to see what was left for tomorrow. To my surprise, we had completed all the tasks that had been planned for both days! All I could say to them was "what else ya got for us?"

I can say that I couldn't be more proud of our team. Everyone poured thier hearts out on this project and got along great. I can't wait for tomorrow.
