The Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Scholarship Program encourages diversity in the health care workforce and honors teachers that make a difference in the lives of their students. In 2012, 110 high school students and 32 college students received a $2,000 scholarship toward a career in health care. A $5000 grant was also made to the Longview School District in honor of Daniel Ruiz, a teacher at Mark Morris High School in Longview, Washington. Watch the video. |

Kaiser Permanente Northwest's Oral Health Grant Initiative has enabled the Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation to develop a new, innovative, school-based dental care model. Nearly 1,000 Forest Grove and Tigard (Ore.) high school students, without access to dental care, are expected to receive care at school-based health centers. Watch the video. |

A one-year study to help Mexican-American women lose weight and keep it off. The study is unique because it is specifically designed for Spanish-speaking women of Mexican origin. Participants in the study attend group meetings where they learn about nutrition, food choices, and weight-control strategies, including keeping a food and exercise diary. This video profiles one study participant who has achieved great success in the program. Watch the video. El estudio es innovador por estar diseñado específicamente para mujeres hispanoparlantes de origen mexicano. Las participantes asisten a reuniones semanales donde aprenden sobre nutrición, opciones de alimentos, y estrategias para el control de peso, incluyendo cómo llevar un registro diario del consumo personal de alimentos y del ejercicio que realizan. The Kaiser Permanente Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation is sponsoring a collaboration among more than 30 non-profit organizations that share a common goal -- helping children do well in school and get into good colleges. This video features the Dreamer School Project at Alder Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. Alder is the nation's first "Dreamer School" -- a project of the "I Have a Dream Foundation." Students receive tutoring, mentoring and, potentially, college scholarships. The project's goals are to boost test scores, increase high school graduation rates and help students earn college degrees - all of which lead to a healthier community and region. Watch the video. |
