What better way to make walking a part of your daily exercise than to do it with a doctor?
Bring your family and neighbors to our Riverside Medical Center (10800 Magnolia Ave., at the flagpole on the corner of Polk Street and Magnolia Avenue) and join people of all fitness levels gearing up to “Walk with a Doc.” Meet Paul Hartfield, MD, at 12:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and head out for a walk of about 1 mile around the Medical Center.
“Physical activity has tremendous health benefits,” says Fontana Family Medicine physician Bob Sallis, MD. He’s also our physician spokesperson for our Every Body Walk! campaign. “We recommend that adults get 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise, like taking a brisk walk. Walking is easy. You can break it up any way you want: 30 minutes 5 times a week, or even 15 minutes 10 times a week.”
Studies show that regular walking can significantly lower your risk of chronic disease. And if you have a chronic disease, it can help prevent secondary complications.
“We know that regular exercise strengthens bones, helps protect against osteoporosis, reduces depression and dementia, improves heart and lung function, helps maintain a healthy weight, and lowers the risk for cancer,” says Dr. Sallis.
