West Los Angeles member Henry Morrison wanted to learn better ways to take care of his health. So he enrolled in our six-session Healthier Living: Managing Ongoing Health Conditions workshop.
Morrison, 83, has chronic heart disease, high blood pressure, and prediabetes. “I learned what was causing my symptoms and how to manage them. I also learned how to live with my condition, adjust to it, and change my mood.”
Morrison now practices guided imagery, breathing exercises, and regular physical exercise. He’s also taken diabetes and memory classes to learn more about self-care.
“In this interactive workshop, we help people set one simple goal each week and start changing their lives,” says nurse educator Judy Fager, RN. “They learn how to manage stress, eat healthier, develop an exercise program, communicate better with their families and physicians, and live a happier, healthier life. They also support one another in making change.”
“Mr. Morrison has used the program very well,” says Fager, who has taught the workshop for nine years. “He’s joined an exercise class, reduced his stress, and become more social. It’s a wonderful class.”
The program includes a book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, and a relaxation CD — all provided at no charge to members with chronic conditions. For more information or to enroll, call:
